Fairy Flower Mandala

Summer has finally arrived here in Dublin Ireland ;), It's been blue skies and sunshine all week from sun up till sundown. So it was only fitting that I would incorporate Summer into this weeks blog post.  

Those of you who follow my blog regularly will know that 'Fleur' our house fairy is a nature fairy and she has gone back to fairyland for the summer ;), she has been popping back from time to time to collect/reply to her fairy mail and/or to leave trinkets from fairyland for the kids before flitting back to fairyland ;),

The fine weather has my garden bursting with daisy's and buttercups and it gave me the inspiration for this weeks blog post!

I picked a few Daisy's,  Buttercups, Flower petals and leaves and headed up to our fairy door to make a 'Fairy Flower Mandala' Here's how it turned out!

'Fleur' left the kids a letter explaining that this was a 'Fairy Flower Mandala' that they make them in all shapes, and sizes in fairyland to celebrate the beginning of Summer. They hold Fairy Feis where they dance around the flowers under the moonlight. She asked the kids if they would make a 'Fairy Flower Mandala' in the garden for her and her fairy friends to enjoy ;),

My gosh the kids were so intrigued a little shocked and amazed I think ;), needless to say off we went straight away on a nature walk to collect flowers and petals to make our very own 'Fairy Flower Mandala'. It was so much fun! A great use of creativity and imagination kept them busy for the entire afternoon and they all turned out amazingly! Next time we make them I think I will use PVA glue to stick them to paper and then frame them they are so pretty.

When the kids went to bed I sprinkled a little glitter over the 'Fairy Flower Mandala's' that they had made. They were so happy the next morning to find traces of fairy dust they were so excited that the fairy's did come and dance among their mandala's

I hope this has inspired you to do the same with your fairy door and bring a little extra excitement and magic into your house. A little old fashioned fun spending time outdoors with the kids having fun and making precious memories.

Make & Do Fairy Door Signs.....

Everyone knows that the Fairy's are a little shy shall we say! So you'll never see them in the light of the day.  They love to communicate with us through letters and by leaving us fairy sized trinkets and treasures.

Our Fairy Fleur is a nature fairy ;) a few weeks ago she wrote and told the kids that she was off back to Fairyland for the Summer.  The kids have been missing her ........ So this week I decided to make a door sign for our fairy door! 

The possibilities are endless, I made two one that says 'In the Garden' and another one that says 'Away With The Fairy's'.

I hung the 'In The Garden' sign off the door handle and sprinkled a trail of sunflower and pumpkin seeds outside the door! 

It took awhile for the kids to notice but when they did my gosh they were so excited. Convinced That she was in our garden planting seeds they ran outside hoping to find her! So Stink in Cute ;), 

The door signs were so easy to make and took minutes, so worth it!

Here's all you will need to make them:

- Some Card stock Paper

- Markers or Colouring Pencils

- Stickers or Shaped Sprinkles

- Thread

- A sewing needle

- Some PVA glue

- Scissors

Using the card stock paper cut out the size and shape you want you sign to be.  Write your caption on your sign using the markers or the colouring pencils.  Use the needle to pierce two holes in the sign and thread a piece of thread through the holes you just made, tie them together. Decorate your sign with stickers or sparkle shapes and that's it.

Fairy Magic .......

For this weeks blog I decided to have a chat with my little Niece Molly (4yrs old) about Fairy's. All about her Fairy Door and all of the fairy goings on at her house and school!

Fairy Bells

The kids will be so excited when they get home from school today to find they've got 'Fairy Mail' ;) Since we made the little Fairy sized Post box last week they have been checking it two and three times a day to see if Fleur our Fairy has written to them .... Bless!

Fleur our Fairy is heading back to Fairyland not for ever! just for Spring/Summer. Fleur is a nature Fairy, Spring is her busiest season collecting, sorting and planting all the seeds for the spectacular Summer Bloom. 

She did how ever leave the kids a good bye for now letter and a 'Fairy Bell' a magic bell!

 When ever the kids write Fleur a letter they must ring the Fairy Bell. Fleur said that she will be able to hear the bell all the way in Fairyland and will pop back and collect her Fairy Mail! Making sure they keep in touch all Spring/Summer long. She assured the kids that once her work is done come Autumn she will happily move back into our house for the entire winter ....

Fairy Sized Post Box

Lots of little letters get written and left outside our Fairy Door. Some are from the kids to our House Fairy  and some are from our Fairy Fleur replying to the kids with news all the way from Fairyland :),

At the weekend I thought it high time our Fairy Door had a Postbox a Fairy sized one at that!

So easy to do I don't know why I didn't think of doing this before!

All you need is one A4 sheet of card paper, Some ribbon, Sellotape, Scissors, Glue, A pencil, a lollipop Stick and a sprinkling of glitter.

I couldn't find a ruler anywhere so when it came to cutting the pieces of paper to size I improvised.  I figured I'd cut a small rectangular piece to the length and width I wanted to make the dome part and then cut a piece of paper the same length and width to make the base once the dome part was folded on top (It worked).  Once I was happy they fit together perfectly I stuck the dome part and the base part together using some sellotape.

The ends were a little tricky! I cut out two rectangular pieces of the card paper the exact same width as the base. Then I held it up to either end of the postbox, using a pencil I traced an outline around each opening and cut it out. I used sellotape and a little glue to secure them in place.  Don't forget to leave it so one end can be opened!

For the stand I used a lollipop stick. I covered both sides of the stick in glue then wrapped the stick with the ribbon.  Then I simply applied some glue to the closed end of the postbox and stuck it to the ribbon covered lollipop stick.  While the glue dried I made the glitter Flag for the side of the postbox.  Using the card paper I cut out a Flag shape covered it in glue and sprinkled it with gold glitter then shuck off the excess glitter. Once that had dried I stuck it to the side of the postbox with a little glue. 

To stick the Postbox to the wall beside our Fairy Door I used a little self adhesive putty. We're pretty happy with how it turned out the kids decorated it with some fairy stickers and wrote our Fairy a letter letting her know how it works in case she didn't already know :),

Easter Decoration and Ideas

It's hard to even imagine that it's Spring and  that Easter is merely a few days away! As I write this weeks blog I'm looking out my window at a blizzard of Snow!!! On the upside it's safe to say the Easter Bunny and Mother Goose won't have to worry about any of their freshly laid chocolate eggs melting as they deliver their yummable treats on Saturday night :),

I just love thinking and planning about how I'm going to surprise the kids and decorate our little Fairy door.  This Easter I decided to go Big on the decorations I just can't get enough of the adorable little stickers n sprinkles! They are too cute. 

Each year we make and decorate an Easter Tree for our house, so today I thought Perfect I will have a bash at making a fairy sized Easter tree and it turned out Amazing!!! I ws given a gift of some Easter sprinkles and stickers from my mum last week needless to say they came in handy for this little project. She picked them up in the 2Euro shop here in Ireland but I'm sure most local craft stores will carry similar.

Bracing the snowy elements I headed out to find some moss and a few twigs.  I literally took the cap off a bottle of a mini hairspray bottle and covered it with paper. Then I brushed on some pva glue and sprinkled it with gold glitter to make a sparkly pot for my Easter Tree. Once it was dry I popped a good blob of blue tack in the bottom of the pot to keep the twigs in place. Then I positioned my twigs, making sure they were firmly stuck into the blue tac. Once the twigs were in place I broke off little pieces of moss and stuck it in between the branches and filled in any gaps.

 

The decorations were so easy to make, the sheet of stickers had doubles of each little sticker so I literally stook them to each other (back to back) so the image was on both sides. Taking a needle I pierced a hole through the top of the little sticker and threaded through some thread tied it easy as!

 

Then I simply hung them on the little Easter Tree branches, Placed the tree by the door, stuck a few Easter stickers around the door and sprinkled some easter sprinkles infront of the fairy door.

The kids were blown away! They just loved it...... it only took me 30mins to make it was worth every minute. I've made and bought a fantastic collection of Fairy Door decorations for each of the holiday seasons. Each year I will add to my collection and I look forward to the day my kids will use the same decorations to bring the magic of the fairy's into their own childrens lives a little extra childhood magic.

 

On Easter Sunday I've planned a Fairy sized Easter Egg hunt around the house for the kids. 'Fleur' our Fairy will leave a fairy sized note at the door with the first clue... Should be fun! For Fairy sized Easter eggs I bought some mini eggs and some malteaster mini chocolate bunnies. I plan on hiding them  around the house for the kids to figure out the clues and find!

Some Fairy Door Inspiration....

One of our very first customers was a Lovely Lady from New York who purchased a Leprechaun door for her Children to bring a little extra Irish magic into her home for St. Patricks Day! Cindy has so kindly shared all the goings on with her Leprechaun since he arrived and last week she sent us a reel of pictures depicting 'One Year on living with Paddy the Leprechaun' it's far too good not to be shared!



One year ago, on St Patrick's Day morning 2012, we discovered that a leprechaun had moved into our house and set up home under our stairs....absolutely could not believe it
 

 

Chocolate coins and Irish pennies were left outside his door along with a note and a festive sprinkling of shiny shamrock confetti. What in the blarney stone was going on?

 

 

A leprechaun has always visited our house on the night before St Pat's leaving money and treats in our shoes that are left outside our bedroom doors. But.....to actually have him move in?? Beyond magical.

 

 

Before too long he started decorating! Lots of banging noises at night and a faint sound of Irish music all started to make sense now

 

 

 Now a potted plant and evidence of his shenanigans!! Such an amazing surprise, but I have to admit that I wasn't too happy about the dirt left on my floor :-)

 

A lamp appeared one day and we were all dumbfounded....WHAT? But then we realized that it's so dark in our house at night when we've all gone to sleep that any self respecting leprechaun would need to find his way home after a night at the pub. We completely understood ;-)

 

 

October rolled around and he haunted his tiny home much to my delight! LOVED it and decided to forgive him for all the late night noises and countless times that he has hid our shoes and car keys :-) He's a trickster that wee one!

 

 

Christmas time was here and he decked the halls like nobody's business....we were quite impressed. He left us a lovely card, small chocolate treats and a miniature bottle of Irish whiskey, which went promptly in my decaf coffee on Christmas night ;)

 

 

There's nothing more magical than a leprechaun's Christmas tree....except maybe a sprinkling of sparkling snowflakes! I'm still finding little shimmery pieces around. He's been such a fun house guest....how can I get mad over it? We're so lucky to have him here with us ;-)


St. Patricks day 2013 this is what we woke up to find!

 A magical surprise from Paddy this mornin'! And....a back door has now appeared in our kitchen! I knew he was up to somethin' ;-)


We just love it, it just goes to show the magic of our little Fairy doors is really only limited by your creativity and imagination.  Cindy certainly sets the bar when it comes to making the magic happen..........creating magical memories her children will remember throughout their lives and hopefully pass the magic of Paddy onto their children..
